Diamond Herald offers rough diamond courses at all levels, from introductory to advanced.

Students will inspect thousands of rough stones from at least 10 mines around the world, all of them documented in pictures and videos on the Diamond Herald website.  All courses, except the Introduction, are aimed at students who are already fully familiar with the fundamentals of polished diamonds.

The following rough diamond courses are available:

  • Introduction to rough diamonds – for students with basic polished diamond knowledge.
    1. Diamond geology – diamond geology; natural diamond formation; kimberlite vs alluvial and marine deposits; world mines.
    2. Diamond exploration – types of exploration; kimberlitic indicator minerals (KIM); trial mining.
    3. Diamond mining – open pit – underground; blasting and hauling; processing.
    4. Diamond testing and physical parameters – hardness and fragility; RI, spectrum, fluorescence and more.
    5. Rough diamond processing – industrial; sawing, cleaving, makeable; clarities; shapes.
    6. Outlines for rough diamond evaluation – may include introduction to polished diamonds evaluation, depending on students’ level.

    1. Diamond processing – the transformation of rough diamonds to polished; the diamond factory, its experts and equipment; polished yield from rough stones.
    2. Rough diamond shapes – terminology; initial basic shapes – sawable, makeable, cleavage; advanced sub-categories.
    3. Clarity and color – changes and improvements during processing.
    4. Larger sizes – specific single stones – initial loupe inspection and basic 3D digital analysis.
    5. Smaller sizes – parcel approach; commercial assortments.
    6. Pricing and values.
  • Rough diamond evaluationAdvanced – for students with advanced polished knowledge, including gemologists and diamond traders.
    1. The diamond factory – experts and equipment; rounds and fancy shapes; polishing fancy colors; automation.
    2. Review of existing technologies: Sarine, Galaxy, OGI and more.
    3. Larger sizes – 20 to 30 case studies – fancy shapes; variety of makeables; sawables, crystals and cleavage; flexibility to add more case studies and extend the course.
    4. Smaller sizes: Commercial assorting training with head-loupe and loupe. Commercial assortments of original goods; typical parcel profiles of country-of-origin and mines.
